As a school counselor, I have the neat opportunity to get to know students at all grade levels 5th-8th grade. People often talk about transitions and how they can be hard, especially for middle school students entering MS and exiting to US.
H O W E V E R : One of my "stay gold moment" that made me smile was to see Mrs. Gehrer's Advising of 5th grade girls not only be inclusive, but also celebrate each other in their class. When they realized one of the girls had a birthday and was bringing treats, they wanted to "surprise her" with a card and an opportunity to sing to her in advising. Beaming with excitement, all of the girls surrounded Lucy wishing her a happy birthday. The girls then planned opportunities to celebrate each other, mentioning that they could include half-birthdays for summer birthdays. People say that children come to school to learn from teachers, but it is often that students can also exemplify life's important lesson. If you have an opportunity to spend time with the 5th grade team of teachers and class, you should! Mrs. Gehrer's Advising of 5th grade girls have so much excitement and the students are able to model the excitement and compassion to themselves and those around them. Seeing the way this 5th grade group of girls continue to show each other love and support should inspire all of us! Way to go, girls!
